What Clarity does well

Credit where it’s due: Clarity is free, with no traffic limits, backed by Microsoft’s infrastructure. You get session recordings, heatmaps, and useful insights at zero cost and effectively unlimited scale. For a hobby project, a high-traffic site on a tight budget, or anyone who simply isn’t concerned about how their analytics vendor uses the data, Clarity is a strong, capable choice — and we’d tell you to use it.

What Clarity costs you

“Free” is never really free; the question is what you pay with. With Clarity, you pay with the data. Per Microsoft’s terms, the behavioural data Clarity collects can be used by Microsoft — including to build and improve its products. It does not offer a per-visitor right-to-erasure for GDPR requests, and it does not honour the browser’s Do Not Track signal. And because it’s a free product, the terms leave Microsoft free to change what’s included, or to start charging for features, at any time.
